The Oregon Psychedelic Industry Begins
With the regulatory framework of Measure 109 now in place, the start of 2023 means that Oregon is beginning to accept applications for licenses to operate in the new psychedelic industry.
The Oregon Health Authority Public Health Division's Center for Health Protection now houses a new division called Oregon Psilocybin Services. Ballot Measure 109, passed in November 2020, instructs the Oregon Health Authority to license and regulate the production, transportation, distribution, sale, and purchase of psilocybin items as well as the supply of psilocybin services. Starting on January 2, 2023, license applications will be accepted by the Oregon Psilocybin Services Section.Manufacturers, service providers, testing facilities, and facilitators all need licenses to work with psychedelics and provide services to the new patient seeking alternative therapy treatments. According to data gathered by SykoActive, the Oregon Health Authority has only received three manufacturer license applications and forty labor permit applications as of Wednesday.
What are psilocybin services?
In Oregon, “psilocybin services” refers to preparation, administration and integration sessions provided by a licensed facilitator. The psilocybin products consumed must be cultivated or produced by a licensed psilocybin manufacturer and may only be provided to a client at a licensed psilocybin service center during an administration session. Psilocybin services will be available to people age 21 or older and will not require a prescription or medical referral. People accessing psilocybin services are called “clients”.
