Meta Launches Open-Source AI LLaMa for Commercial Use

Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, has announced that it will launch a commercial version of its open source artificial intelligence (AI) language model, LLaMa, for enterprise customers.

LLaMa, which stands for Large Language Model Architecture, is a generative AI system that can produce natural language texts on various topics and tasks. Meta has been developing LLaMa since 2019 and has made it available for researchers and academics to use and improve.

Now, Meta plans to offer LLaMa to companies who want to leverage its capabilities for their own needs¹[1]. According to the Financial Times, Meta will charge enterprise customers for customizing LLaMa with their own proprietary data, allowing them to fine-tune the model for specific domains and applications.

Meta's president of global affairs, Nick Clegg, said that LLaMa is part of Meta's vision for open AI, which aims to increase transparency, innovation, and trust in AI systems. He also said that there is a role for both open source and proprietary models in the AI landscape.

Meta's move to launch LLaMa for commercial use comes as it faces competition from other tech giants such as Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon, who have their own proprietary language models and generative AI products. Meta hopes that LLaMa's open source nature will give it an edge over its rivals and attract more customers and collaborators.
