Last week saw one of the biggest psilocybin mushroom busts in U.S. history, sparking renewed discussion around the legal status and potential benefits of this controversial psychedelic substance.

The Bust

On Thursday, November 2nd, 2023, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Hartford Task Force received a tip that 21-year-old Weston Soule was operating a large-scale psilocybin mushroom growing operation out of his home in Burlington, CT.

Officers inspected the property and saw ventilation equipment indicating a possible drug lab. Although Soule showed them his detached garage where he claimed to be growing legal mushrooms, he refused to allow officers to search the rest of the house.

Soule was arrested and charged with operating a drug factory and possession with intent to distribute. He is being held on $250,000 bond pending arraignment.
